Perhaps it’s just a pasty and a pint in the local pub. Whatever makes your heart beat a little faster, Cornwall has it and St Mabyn is in the perfect location to enjoy it.
It’s just 10 minutes in the car to Daymer Beach, a favourite with our guests. With golden sands backed by dunes and views across the Camel Estuary, it’s a gorgeous, dog-friendly, off-the-beaten-track spot for a family day out and great, too for windsurfing. Just round the coast, Polzeath is a laid-back village with another excellent beach. If you’re a surfer, or even just enjoy watching the drama on the waves, Fistral Bay is for you. One of the world’s best surfing spots, it's less than half an hour’s drive from St Mabyn.
Enjoy the rewards of a walk along South West Coast Path in North Cornwall. This rugged coastline offers ocean views, hidden coves and picturesque harbour towns. Down at sea level, you can go windsurfing, paddle boarding and coasteering, or spot marine life on a Sealife Safari boat trip from Padstow. Back on dry land, Bodmin Moor is an 80-square mile natural playground, where you can hike, cycle and climb. And for a gentler pace, follow the Camel Trail by bike or by foot through the calm, green interiors of Cornwall
At the Eden Project, just over half an hour away from St Mabyn, wander through the landscapes of the world before letting the kids loose in ‘Nature’s Playground’. Then get your adrenaline up at Hangloose, an outdoor adventure with zipwire, aerial assault course and more. Also nearby, Lanhydrock has something for all ages, with the house and gardens to explore and acres of parkland for picnics and play. A trip to Bodmin Moor gets everyone out in the fresh air, before plunging into the dark recesses of Bodmin Jail and the Smuggling Museum at Jamaica Inn. Step back into the light on the coast at Tintagel, where you can explore the ruins of the Tintagel Castle and steep yourselves in the legend of King Arthur.
You can find plenty to do on holiday at St Mabyn, all within a short walk or drive. In our local village, discover the 16th century church and afterwards enjoy a pint at the village pub. Within a reasonable hike, is Pencarrow House and Gardens, with its Iron Age fort, children’s play area and café. For a different experience, try Discovering42, a fascinating project combining art, science and sustainability. Take a walk or cycle through Cardinham Woods, one of Cornwall’s best kept secrets, with shady clearings, a tumbling stream and lots of wildlife. Finally, visit Colliford Lake for walks, birdwatching and some for the best brown trout fishing in Cornwall. Feeding into it is Dozmary Pool, which according to legend, is where King Arthur received the Sword, Excalibur, from the Lady of the Lake.
The area around St Mabyn is heavenly for shopping, particularly if you like independent boutiques and galleries and local crafts and produce. Head for Port Isaac, a picture-perfect Cornish harbour village where, after some gift shopping, you can sunbathe on the curve of white sand you’ve most likely seen in TV’s Doc Martin. Meanwhile, Wadebridge is a bustling market town on the Camel Estuary, which claims the highest number of independent shops in Cornwall. And take a drive to Tretawn Farm if you’re around on the 3rd Sunday of the month, for the farmers’ market, where you can buy local fish, cider, honey and lots more.
In your well-equipped kitchen at St Mabyn, cooking is a pleasure but what about when you want to eat out? Walk up to St Mabyn Inn for good quality pub food or enjoy a cream tea at Pencarrow House. Fish and chips at the seaside is a must, and where better than Padstow, home to Rick Stein’s Fish and Chip Restaurant and Takeaway? And if that’s whet your appetite for seafood, you must try the Stepping Stone in Wadebridge, a fabulous independent eatery with an emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients and Cornish seafood. Oh, and don’t forget to try a Cornish pasty from Malcom Barnecutt in Wadebridge.
